Price of Fuel up 2p today – 5 Tips to avoid rising cost

Today the price of petrol and diesel went up by 2p, thanks to our Government. They say the rise is essential to support the public finances.

With VAT included the real rise is 2.3p. This now brings the average cost for petrol to £1.05. The VAT rate is also due to return back to 17.5% from its current 15% in January 2010, this will push up the cost further. Global oil prices could also rise over the coming months as global economies continue to recover, pushing up the price at the pumps even more.

The prices seen at the start of 2009, around 85p per litre, are now long gone and it looks like they won’t be returning.

Empty TankHow To Avoid The Rising Cost
If you are short of time read the 5 tips below. Or if you want to save upto £480 per year read every single tip on the main Save Petrol website. Even if you have read them before it is good to jog your memory and make sure you are putting the tips into action.

Here are 5 very simple, and quick tips you can put into action right away. They can save you quite a bit of money (more than just the 2p rise!):

  • When coasting up to traffic lights don’t put the car into neutral, keep it in gear
  • Make sure you are in the right gear, engines work most efficiently between 1,500 and 2,500 RPM.
  • Avoid high speeds on motorways, drag increases rapidly over 70mph so fuel consumption suffers significantly
  • Avoid short journeys altogether if you can, walk or get on your bike
  • A cold engine uses twice as much fuel as a warm one, so for the first few minutes drive very carefully
