After the earlier rise this month in duty thanks to the Government this is good to see. Hopefully the other supermarkets will follow the lead.

Today the price of petrol and diesel went up by 2p, thanks to our Government. They say the rise is essential to support the public finances.

With VAT included the real rise is 2.3p. This now brings the average cost for petrol to £1.05. The VAT rate is also due to return back to 17.5% from its current 15% in January 2010, this will push up the cost further. Global oil prices could also rise over the coming months as global economies continue to recover, pushing up the price at the pumps even more.

The prices seen at the start of 2009, around 85p per litre, are now long gone and it looks like they won’t be returning.

How To Avoid The Rising Cost
If you are short of time read the 5 tips below. Or if you want to save upto £480 per year read every single tip on the main Save Petrol website. Even if you have read them before it is good to jog your memory and make sure you are putting the tips into action.

Here are 5 very simple, and quick tips you can put into action right away. They can save you quite a bit of money (more than just the 2p rise!):

When coasting up to traffic lights don’t put the car into neutral, keep it in gear

Make sure you are in the right gear, engines work most efficiently between 1,500 and 2,500 RPM.

Avoid high speeds on motorways, drag increases rapidly over 70mph so fuel consumption suffers significantly

Avoid short journeys altogether if you can, walk or get on your bike

A cold engine uses twice as much fuel as a warm one, so for the first few minutes drive very carefully

For lots more tips don’t forget to also visit the main Save Petrol website where there is currently 19 tips available absolutely free.

This is the lowest petrol has cost since April 2007!

The price of diesel has also been reduced to 105.9p per litre, it is good to see the gap between petrol and diesel is now small and not a silly void.

Over the past month fuel has fallen by a record amount. Average UK pump prices dropped from 106.4p per litre in mid October to 94.86p per litre in mid November.

Very good news, may the lower prices continue!

When petrol was ridiculously priced over 120p per litre and diesel seemed like it was gonna steam over 200p per litre at one point I did wonder when the end would come! Thank god the price of oil has nearly halved since we saw record high prices at the pumps.

At the silly prices it felt like all money was going on fuel, I litreally felt sick when I put £40 of petrol in a Ford Fiesta! Now the lowest price in my area for unleaded is 94.9p (106.9p for diesel) which I can live with. It should still be much lower but at least it has came down significantly. With Mr Credit Crunch doing his best to hurt all of us another drop in fuel prices would definitely be welcome.

This price drop isn’t gonna suddenly make me start driving more, but at least it will mean a few more pennies in the bank at the end of the month!

The AA is anticipating a 4p drop for petrol prices and a 6p drop for diesel prices in coming weeks. This is due to oil dropping back below the $100 a barrel mark.

Over the past month petrol prices have fell by just 0.25p and diesel prices by 1.32p, despite the price of oil falling. The lower oil price should soon filter through to the forecourts and we should see significant drops very soon (in coming weeks).

Fingers crossed!
